Nursery
A place to learn, develop and grow ‘happy healthy children’
Welcome to Nursery. We believe that every day is a learning day and that learning is all around us. As well as being a place of learning, we pride ourselves on ensuring that all children are coming into a loving, caring environment where they are valued and listened to. We also involve children and parents in trying to continually improve.
We have a clear vision of what we want to achieve at Paget Nursery:
- To provide a safe, happy, caring, secure and stimulating environment for your child.
- To enable all children to develop their capabilities as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society.
- To help all children to prepare for the future.
The Nursery environment in door and outdoors is organised into areas which allow children to learn through play. Children have daily access to the inside and outside environment where there is opportunity to explore a range of experiences for learning.
We try to give the children access to real objects to support them with their play. Through providing first-hand experience, pictures, artefacts, photographs, resources and activities we provide a rich and stimulating environment, in which children feel safe secure and cannot help but play, explore and learn.
Nursery staff work closely with children to develop positive attitudes to learning through play across a broad and balanced curriculum. Children learn to be independent, work alongside and to play with other children, to take turns, share and listen with others. With adults working alongside them children are encouraged to explore, investigate, think creatively and problem solve.
We encourage them to be confident when talking with peers and adults, to say how they feel and do things for themselves.
They have a mix of adult led and child-initiated activities. For most of their time the children can move freely around the room and outside and choose where to play and learn. Staff work alongside the children, making observations and extending their learning by their interactions and adjustments of the activities.
All children’s language is assessed on entry using the Wellcomm Screening Tool and the children have activities in an appropriate learning group to develop their language skills. Children also have a daily time of stories, rhymes and songs to develop their early reading skills. The children have an opportunity to take library books home to share with their parents.
They have daily sessions to develop their understanding of Number and mathematics, singing counting songs and learning through play.
Our Wednesday morning session is our Wellbeing Time. The children share and choose library books, they take part in a Physical session inside or outside and before going home take part in yoga or peer massage.
Children access the curriculum through a well-planned and appropriately resourced learning environment that takes account of the characteristics of young children as learners and the developmental course they take. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a statutory curriculum for children aged 0-5 years. It emphasises that through play children learn very effectively.
Within the EYFS are goals, which most children are expected to achieve before the end of the year in the Reception class. The steps which children take as they progress towards these goals are known as Development Matters.
The EYFS is divided into seven areas of learning and development, all are important and inter-connected.
These seven areas consist of three prime areas:
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
…and four specific areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Thank you for entrusting your child to us. We promise to do our best every day to be your child’s companion in learning. We will work alongside you to help your child grow.
